Our diverse industry experiences give us an edge in IP law.
The Mechanicus advantage.

We've Been There
Mechanicus attorneys have practical and technical background experience that can make the difference in understanding your case, and your challenges as a business. We know what it's like to start a business from scratch, what it takes to keep old and expensive infrastructure operating just a little longer, how it feels to create a work of art that's never quite finished.
Eclectic Experience
Understanding your new invention, no matter how unorthodox, is just another interesting challenge. We've never flinched from the unfamiliar, even outside our practice, which has led us to some interesting places. Our members have welded, designed electronics, trained student pilots, raised cattle, landed broken aircraft, coded websites, assisted in veterinary surgery, repaired computers, built treehouses, volunteered with natural disaster response teams, and patrolled the Indian Ocean for pirates.
Always Adaptable
Your money is better spent on our analysis than our administrative overhead. We're applying this philosophy in our law practice by adopting and integrating cutting-edge communication, search, security, and case management tools as they become reliable, discarding the obsolete and overcomplicated systems still used by many other firms. This tech-forward approach enhances efficiency, allowing us to deliver more value.

Here's how our firm works.
Long Term Outlook
We treat every contact as a potential long-term client. Our goal is to build trust, and we're honored by how many of our clients have stuck with us for decades. Many have stayed with our members who left other firms to form this one, and many are still here despite restructuring or changing owners.
Transparency
Our ethos requires honest and straightforward legal counsel, so we inform clients upfront about significant case challenges, building trust and empowering them to make informed decisions.
Greater than our sum
Even when we're off the clock we're often swapping notes and ideas on ongoing cases. We've found that a fresh set of eyes and ears can do a lot to break loose a stuck case.
Direct to the Source
We've saved many more patent and trademark applications with informal phone calls, than we have with formal arguments to appeal boards. Our work bounces between USPTO examiners, engineers, artists, attorneys, marketing reps, and the C-suite, so we're used to dealing with language barriers. We're not shy about setting up direct interviews when clarity is needed.
Forward thinking
Always pushing for continuous improvement and growth, we integrate innovative methods and technologies to anticipate future challenges and opportunities.
Like our clients, we're a team of innovators dedicated to our craft.

Eric Jones
Managing Partner, lead patent counsel
Eric joined the Air Force as a pilot, after working as an engineer for Texas Instruments, and he attended law school while still flying fighters for the Air National Guard. By the time he joined Mechanicus to take over as lead patent counsel, he'd accumulated decades of experience in intellectual property prosecution. He enjoys home improvement projects and experimenting with his vegetable garden.

Kelsey Jones
Managing Partner
Kelsey spent several years working with small business incubators and nonprofits as an audiovisual tech, event producer, and web designer. He got his start in the legal field by creating drawings and schematics for patents, and gradually learned the ropes of intellectual property from there. By the time he got his law license, he had nearly a decade of experience assisting in patent, trademark, and copyright matters. In his spare time he's working on improving his woodworking and welding skills, and assisting local natural disaster response groups.

Michael Matuson
Managing Partner
A former naval officer and computer hardware technician, Michael found a knack for intellectual property law as a student attorney with the University of Tennessee's legal clinic. With years of trademark experience now under his belt, he is currently studying to become Mechanicus' latest patent attorney. Outside the legal world, he helps his wife run her veterinary practice specializing in horses.

Mechanicus was started because we care about ethics and putting clients first .
The legal field is changing. It always has, but several recent developments finally let us make the jump to try running a law firm our own way.
Why should we maintain an opulent skyscraper office when our clients are all over the country? We'd rather find an excuse to visit our clients' factories and offices so we can better understand their operations.
Why go through the petty office politics of a salary committee when we can agree on a simple formula to handle billing without drama?
Why repeatedly run the risk of needing debt to stay solvent in what ought to be a very low overhead business?
